TOP 10 JAPANESE SELVEDGE RAW DENIM

Think of blue jeans, and many will think of the US. But it’s Japan that keeps the true spirit of denim alive. Those brands you see today in America are only a shadow of the jeans that America gave birth to. Production of raw, unwashed denim was discontinued in the US in the 1960s, and now almost all you can get is pre-washed and artificial.

In Japan, however, the unadulterated spirit of blue denim is alive and kicking. True selvedge denim, produced on age-old looms and often featuring rivets and pocket stitching. Well, it is truly ironic that Japan’s strict adherence to low-technology that elsewhere in the world no one wants to use anymore, has made the country the world’s leader in denim production.

Anyway, Japan now has so many companies producing high-quality jeans that it makes your head spin. Some of the better known ones are what we’re mentioning here.

Here was the denim competition we did among our team last week to pick out the top ten Japanese selvedge raw denim worth investing your money in. The room was getting intense, all of us brought up the best pair we thought it would beat the others’. All the denim gurus were amazed enough and finally, here are the top ten pairs we got.

Samurai S5000vx
Rare and unique fabrics from Japan, high quality and satire play on our celebrity obsessed culture. The list wouldn’t be complete without this warrior, of course. We love its uniqueness of how the selvage line contains intertwining strands of Red and Silver lamé which symbolize the bleeding passion of the samurai's soul and the gleam of the razor sharp sword which he possesses. If you are for fades, the jeans fade exceedingly well, giving a contrast between the dark hand-dyed indigo and bright white cotton that is impossible to achieve with mass-produced jeans. Win.

Flat Head 3001
Here is one of their most popular fits from the Pioneer series. It has a classic slim silhouette with a low rise. The pair got a feeling of produced by an old power loom irregularity and the 14.5oz DENIM use that a strong omission long appears if there are quite common feelings and wears it. Well, this is wicked. You know, in the competition, amongst the realm of showing off fades, this pair was the one whose fade bring together our three denim gurus to it at once.

Pure Blue Japan xx-005
Need help picking your next pair of jeans? The denim nerds in our team threw out their spicy opinions a lot and decided we should go for this very PBJ xx-005. The pair is all woven using the same single shuttle loom machine which was manipulated and rigged in such a way as to create this unique loose and uneven weave, and only for use by Pure Blue Japan. Just these denims mentioned above are woven on this one machine which must be shared and divided into small productions of each denim throughout the year. Because of this, the productions are small and infrequent which makes these denims that much more special and unique.

Studio D'Artisan SD-103
Don't want to spend almost 300 if you’re not getting the best for your money?... or do you assume any of the price range're all good and just pick whichever? No, it’s not. Pick this, due to its shrink-to-fit feature, your legs will thank it later. The strong nep weave with the white cotton tufts sewn in, standing out even better given the fair hefty 15 Oz. denim. And if you want any pair to come out a brownish blue color after a wear, pick this too. The result is excellent, really.
